According to NCRB\u2019s \u201cCrime in India 2024\u201d report, fake currency worth \u20b954.61 crore was seized last year, making it one of the highest yearly totals since demonetisation. Since 2017, authorities have confiscated counterfeit notes worth nearly \u20b9638 crore across India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fake \u20b9500 Notes Are Exploding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most shocking trend is the massive rise in fake \u20b9500 notes \u2014 the very denomination redesigned and reintroduced after demonetisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports indicate that counterfeit \u20b9500 notes detected in 2024 were nearly four times higher compared to the figures recorded immediately after demonetisation in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even fake \u20b92,000 notes continued surfacing despite the denomination being withdrawn from circulation by the RBI in May 2023. Over 1 lakh fake \u20b92,000 notes were reportedly seized in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This suggests that counterfeit networks adapted quickly to the new currency designs instead of disappearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gujarat Emerges As India\u2019s Biggest Counterfeit Hub<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One state has particularly shocked investigators: Gujarat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2017 and 2024, Gujarat alone accounted for more than \u20b9355 crore worth of counterfeit currency seizures \u2014 over 50% of the national total. In 2022 alone, Gujarat reportedly contributed more than 85% of fake currency seized across India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent crackdowns revealed sophisticated operations involving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Imported special paper from China<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • AI-based design replication tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • High-precision printing equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Distribution through informal courier and real estate networks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    In one major case, police seized fake \u20b9500 notes worth \u20b92.38 crore from a gang operating from Surat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Did Demonetisation Actually Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Demonetisation invalidated old \u20b9500 and \u20b91,000 notes overnight, affecting nearly 86% of India\u2019s currency in circulation at that time. The government argued the move would destroy black money, terror funding, and fake currency networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While old counterfeit notes initially disappeared, experts now argue that fake currency networks simply evolved alongside the new notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The RBI itself had earlier reported that counterfeit detections of new \u20b9500 and \u20b92,000 notes kept rising after 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bigger Threat Than Just Fake Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Counterfeit currency is not just a financial crime \u2014 investigators often describe it as \u201ceconomic terrorism\u201d because fake money can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
