According to WHO-linked reports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At least three passengers have died<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Several more cases remain under investigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around 147\u2013150 passengers and crew are still onboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ship has been diverted toward the Canary Islands after being denied docking in Cape Verde initially<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The two Indian nationals onboard are part of the crew and, according to Indian authorities, no immediate public health threat to India has been identified so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Hantavirus?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly virus usually transmitted through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rodent urine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rodent droppings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saliva from infected rodents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contaminated surfaces or dust particles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The virus can cause severe illnesses such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscle pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe respiratory distress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rare Human-To-Human Transmission Suspected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason the outbreak has attracted global attention is because officials suspect involvement of the Andes virus strain \u2014 one of the very few hantavirus strains known to occasionally spread between humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO and other agencies are investigating whether limited human-to-human transmission may have occurred onboard the ship.
