{"id":1308187,"date":"2026-04-10T10:58:45","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1308187"},"modified":"2026-04-10T10:58:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:28:58","slug":"woman-employee-awarded-rs-1-7-lakh-for-being-called-auntie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/woman-employee-awarded-rs-1-7-lakh-for-being-called-auntie\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman Employee Awarded Rs 1.7 Lakh For Being Called &#8220;Auntie&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A healthcare assistant of Indian origin working for the UK\u2019s NHS won a legal case after being repeatedly called \u201cauntie\u201d by a colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tribunal ruled that this behavior amounted to harassment based on both age and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"872\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-10-at-10.57.10-AM-1024x872.png\" alt=\"Woman Employee Awarded Rs 1.7 Lakh For Being Called &quot;Auntie&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-1308225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-10-at-10.57.10-AM-1024x872.png 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-10-at-10.57.10-AM-300x255.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-10-at-10.57.10-AM-768x654.png 768w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-10-at-10.57.10-AM.png 1118w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the West London NHS Trust was ordered to pay her \u00a31,425.15 as c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/indians-abroad\/called-auntie-by-colleague-indian-origin-woman-wins-harassment-claim-in-uk-11328054\">ompensation for emotional harm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NHS Worker Wins Harassment Case Over Being Called \u201cAuntie,\u201d Awarded Compensation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The case was reviewed by a panel of three judges, who gave detailed reasons for their decision after hearings held the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the court acknowledged that \u201cauntie\u201d is considered a respectful term in Ghanaian culture, they still found the context inappropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nurse who used the term, Charles Oppong, was in a leadership role and was expected to maintain professionalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judgment stated, \u201cWe find that Charles Oppong&#8217;s purpose was probably an offensive attempt at humour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the court concluded that the remarks created an uncomfortable and offensive environment for the claimant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added, \u201cWe find that the claimant did perceive it as creating an offensive environment\u2026 it was reasonable for the comments to have that effect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the tribunal upheld her claim of harassment on these grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Repeated \u201cAuntie\u201d Remarks and Personal Comments Led to Harassment Claim, Tribunal Told<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The claimant, 61-year-old Ilda Esteves, testified that the term was used multiple times despite her asking to be addressed by her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also reported that the nurse made comments suggesting she would be a good match for an older colleague, which occurred more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though cultural context was considered, the tribunal emphasized that her discomfort made the comments unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling noted, \u201csince it was against her wishes it would have been offensive to her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These incidents took place over a short period between June and September 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Esteves requested anonymity during the case, but this request was denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tribunal explained that public transparency in legal proceedings outweighed her request for privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, several of her other claims, including those related to race discrimination and victimisation, were rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claims regarding wage issues were also dismissed due to lack of sufficient grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion, while not all allegations were upheld, the court recognized that the repeated use of the term \u201cauntie\u201d created a hostile environment and warranted compensation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A healthcare assistant of Indian origin working for the UK\u2019s NHS won a legal case after being repeatedly called \u201cauntie\u201d by a colleague.
