The government has stepped up its efforts to combat misinformation, with the Press Information Bureau\u2019s Fact Check Unit (FCU) issuing over 2,900 fact-checks to debunk fake news related to the Centre. Operating under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting<\/a>, the FCU is tasked with identifying and verifying misleading or false content tied to government policies and announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once information is verified through authorised sources, the unit disseminates accurate updates via its official social media handles. According to the Ministry, the FCU has published 2,913 fact-checks so far. These address a diverse spectrum of misinformation, ranging from deepfakes and AI-generated content to fake notifications, forged letters, and fraudulent websites. Through these efforts, the unit aims to create a reliable counter-narrative to the growing tide of digital falsehoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Counterstrike: Policy, Action, and Public Participation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry highlighted the FCU\u2019s crucial role during Operation Sindoor, where it actively identified and countered hostile narratives and misleading claims circulating online. As part of this effort, more than 1,400 URLs containing deceptive or anti-India content were blocked, marking a significant intervention in curbing harmful information flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond reactive measures, the government has established a regulatory framework under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. This framework introduces a Code of Ethics for digital news publishers and sets up a three-tier grievance redressal mechanism to address violations effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the FCU encourages citizens to report suspicious content for verification, fostering public participation in tackling misinformation.
