The suggestion, made in January, aimed to expand access to Aadhaar\u2014a biometric identification system used by over 1.34 billion residents for services ranging from banking to airport verification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first such standoff. Earlier attempts by the government to mandate pre-installed apps\u2014such as a telecom security tool\u2014were rolled back after public criticism.
