Recently, the Ministry of Railways has completed the Final Location Survey (FLS) and prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the 136-km-long new rail line project which is a India-Nepal rail line<\/a> which will further help in improving the connectivity between the two nations and promote economic growth and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connecting Tibet and India By Railway Network Through Nepal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just ahead of a new government taking office in Kathmandu following the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), India has come out with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new rail link between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 In the meantime, a feasibility study for a China-Nepal railway through Tibet is set to be completed in June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears that both of these railway lines from Tibet and India are to reach Kathmandu, effectively linking Tibet and India by railway network through Nepal\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story started when the governments of India and Nepal issued a joint statement to expand rail connectivity on April 7, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving ahead, they have agreed to construct a new electrified railway line, funded by India, linking the border city of Raxaul in India with Kathmandu in Nepal, the Raxaul-Kathmandu new line project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commencement Of the Work On Indo-Nepal Rail Service<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cPashupatinath Dham is located outside India in Kathmandu, Nepal. The nearest Railway station is Raxaul, which is well connected with the railway network. Final Location Survey of Raxaul (India)-Kathmandu (Pashupatinath) new line (136 Km) has been completed and Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared,\u201d said Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railway Minister, in a written statement in Rajya Sabha on March 20, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the DPR is prepared, the project\u2019s sanction requires consultations with various stakeholders, including state governments, along with necessary approvals such as appraisal by NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance, added the Union Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the subject of the timeline, Vaishnaw said, \u201cAs sanctioning of projects is a continuous and dynamic process, exact timelines depend upon appraisals and approvals by various stakeholders.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, the Railway Minister was responding to questions raised by Rajya Sabha MP Prof. Manoj Kumar Jha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, India and Nepal exchanged Letters of Exchange (LoE) to amend the Protocol to the Treaty of Transit last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this agreement, they made an agreement to facilitate the movement of rail-based freight, including bulk cargo, between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
