India\u2019s move toward cleaner energy has gained momentum as the Coal Ministry introduced a financial incentive program to speed up coal gasification projects, encouraging industries to shift from conventional energy systems to low-carbon alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, companies have shown strong interest, indicating rising confidence in coal gasification as a practical and forward-looking solution for the energy sector.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The submission deadline for proposals under Category-I and Category-III was set for November 11, 2024, and the technical bids were opened the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, five proposals were received, including three from government-owned firms and their joint ventures, while the remaining two came from smaller or pilot-scale projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This level of participation suggests that the industry is increasingly viewing coal gasification as an important part of its future plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India has significant coal reserves, estimated at about 400 billion tonnes, making it one of the largest holders globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coal remains central to the country\u2019s energy system, contributing roughly 55% of total energy consumption and about 74% of electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nation\u2019s annual coal demand is currently close to one billion tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Coal Gasification Technology?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coal gasification is gaining attention as an important technological advancement in energy production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process involves heating coal at very high temperatures, typically between 1,000\u00b0C and 1,400\u00b0C, in the presence of oxygen and steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, it produces synthetic gas, or syngas, which mainly consists of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is promoting this technology to boost clean fuel generation, support urea production, and enhance overall energy security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has also set a target of reaching 100 million tonnes of coal gasification output by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, coal gasification enables coal to be converted into syngas that can be further used to produce cleaner fuels, fertilizers, chemicals, and hydrogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach allows for better use of domestic coal resources while improving economic efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To further support adoption, the government has introduced the National Coal Gasification Mission, highlighting its commitment to more sustainable energy solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
