It has physical properties similar to LPG and can be stored as a liquid under pressure, making it suitable for use in existing fuel systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of these similarities, DME can either <strong>replace LPG or be blended with it<\/strong> without requiring major infrastructure changes in cylinders, regulators, or pipelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Developed by Scientists in Pune<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at <strong>CSIR-NCL<\/strong> have developed a <strong>patent-protected technology that converts methanol into DME<\/strong> using a specially designed catalyst. The pilot facility at the lab is currently capable of producing about <strong>250 kg of DME per day<\/strong>, and plans are underway to scale up production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists are now working with engineering partners to build a <strong>demonstration plant capable of producing around 2.5 tonnes per day<\/strong>, which could pave the way for large-scale commercial production in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why DME Is Considered a Better Alternative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>DME offers several advantages over conventional LPG and other fossil fuels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cleaner combustion:<\/strong> Produces very low levels of soot, sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comparable efficiency:<\/strong> Provides thermal efficiency similar to conventional fuels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flexible usage:<\/strong> Can be used in blends with LPG or independently with compatible burners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the <strong>Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)<\/strong> allows blending of <strong>up to 20% DME with LPG<\/strong>, and up to <strong>8% blending requires no change in existing infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Potential Economic Benefits for India<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India imports a large portion of its LPG requirements. Researchers estimate that <strong>replacing just 8% of LPG consumption with DME could save nearly \u20b99,500 crore annually in foreign exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local production of DME using methanol derived from domestic resources could also help reduce India\u2019s vulnerability to global supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond Cooking Fuel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from cooking gas, DME has several other applications. It can be used as an <strong>automotive fuel, aerosol propellant, and industrial chemical feedstock<\/strong>, making it a versatile alternative energy source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With growing concerns over LPG supply disruptions and import dependence, <strong>Dimethyl Ether is emerging as a viable indigenous alternative<\/strong> for India. Developed by scientists in Pune, the technology promises cleaner fuel, lower emissions, and potential economic savings.
