A recent research reveals that several drivers of petrol and diesel vehicles are significantly misinformed about electric cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK\u2019s Driver Avoiding Switching To Electric Vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears that this lack of understanding is causing people to “hold back from making the shift” to electric motoring as per the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think tank, which commissioned the report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the YouGov survey of 1,002 non-electric cars, the drivers found that 51 per cent could correctly answer only two or fewer out of 10 statements about EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sad part is among this ill-informed group, only 5 per cent expressed a desire for an EV as their next car creating a stark contrast to the 63 per cent of those who scored at least eight out of 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Misconceptions Around Electric Vehicles <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a notable misconception that a survey revealed that 46 per cent of drivers wrongly believed electric vehicles are more prone to catching fire than traditionally fuelled cars, despite various studies demonstrating the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA constant stream of misinformation is skewing petrol car drivers\u2019 knowledge of EVs,\u201d said Colin Walker, the ECIU head of transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further adding, \u201cWith two-thirds not knowing that EVs are cheaper to own and run than petrol cars, it\u2019s clear that many are holding back from making the shift to EVs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walker said, \u201cThe latest instability in the Middle East is once again illustrating how using oil to power our cars leaves the UK\u2019s drivers exposed to international markets over which we have no control. While petrol car drivers face paying higher prices at the pump, EV drivers will continue to be able to drive their cars for as little as 2p per mile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe more misinformed you are, the less likely you are to make the switch to an EV.We need to see robust action from the Government, industry and media to dispel the myths of misinformation and to ensure that drivers are equipped with the facts when deciding on their next purchase,\u201d said Labour MP Perran Moon, who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first time that such reports revealed the reality. Prior to this, the House of Lords committee report in 2024 accused the then-Conservative government of failing to demonstrate sufficient \u201curgency\u201d in tackling \u201cthe scale of misinformation\u201d about EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, the Labour Government has pledged to outlaw sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030, they will only have zero-emission models \u2013 which generally means pure electrics \u2013 permitted to be bought from 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under this survey, the Research company YouGov surveyed 1,002 UK drivers of non-EV cars during the period of 25 November and 3 December last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
