India\u2019s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)<\/strong> has updated its flight ticket refund and cancellation norms, giving air travellers a 48-hour \u201clook-in\u201d period<\/strong> after booking during which they can cancel or amend tickets without paying extra fees<\/strong>. This is part of revised Civil Aviation Requirements aimed at improving consumer protection and convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Airlines<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Under the new rules, passengers can cancel or change their flight booking penalty-free within 48 hours of purchase<\/strong> \u2014 provided certain conditions are met \u2014 regardless of whether the ticket is for domestic or international travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conditions and Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To qualify for this 48-hour free cancellation\/ modification benefit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The departure date must be at least 7 days away for domestic flights<\/strong> and 15 days away for international flights<\/strong> from the booking date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The benefit applies only when tickets are booked directly through the airline\u2019s official website<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • If a passenger rebooks under this window, they must pay any fare difference<\/strong> for the new flight chosen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    After the initial 48 hours, normal cancellation and modification charges apply as per the airline\u2019s tariff rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Name Correction and Refund Timelines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The DGCA has also clarified additional passenger rights under the new norms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • No extra charge for correcting a passenger\u2019s name<\/strong> if the mistake is highlighted within 24 hours of booking<\/strong> on the airline\u2019s website.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Airlines must complete refunds within 14 working days<\/strong> for tickets cancelled under this policy. This applies even when bookings were made through travel agents, with the refund responsibility resting with the airline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      This refund timeline is intended to cut down on frequent complaints about delayed reimbursements for unused tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When the Rules Come Into Effect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The revised ticket refund and cancellation norms \u2014 including the 48-hour \u201clook-in\u201d option \u2014 were issued by the DGCA on 24 February 2026<\/strong> and will come into force from 26 March 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
