The <a href=\"https:\/\/news24online.com\/business\/cigarettes-to-get-expensive-from-february-1-classic-gold-flake-marlboro-may-get-costlier-by\/729971\/\">revamped<\/a> system imposes a <strong>specific excise duty per 1,000 sticks<\/strong>, which varies according to whether the cigarette is <strong>filtered or non-filtered<\/strong> and its <strong>length including the filter<\/strong>. As a result:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Short non-filter cigarettes (up to 65 mm) will face a lower duty per stick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filtered and longer cigarettes (above 65 mm) will attract progressively higher duties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some non-standard or uniquely designed sticks fall under the highest levies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The excise duty ranges <strong>from about \u20b92,050 to \u20b98,500 per 1,000 sticks<\/strong>, meaning the added tax per cigarette increases with size and category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact on Popular Brands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new tax regime is expected to affect <strong>mid-to-premium cigarette segments more sharply<\/strong>. Longer and premium variants \u2014 often including well-known brands \u2014 will likely see higher price increases because of the elevated excise duty. Shorter, mass-market cigarettes are expected to see smaller hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brands that could experience notable price adjustments include <strong>Classic<\/strong>, <strong>Gold Flake<\/strong>, <strong>Marlboro<\/strong> and other king-size or premium sticks, as these fall into higher excise brackets based on length and filter type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tax Burden and Consumer Prices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new excise duty will be charged <strong>on top of GST<\/strong>, which applies at either 18 % or 40 % depending on product categorisation. With the withdrawal of the <strong>GST compensation cess<\/strong>, the excise duty becomes the main additional levy targeting cigarettes. Even after these changes, total taxes on cigarettes may still remain below international recommendations but will represent a <strong>significant portion of retail prices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industry Response and Market Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts expect the tax changes could result in <strong>volume contraction<\/strong> in cigarette sales as prices rise, particularly in mid and premium segments. However, the <strong>financial strength of major tobacco companies<\/strong> is anticipated to remain robust despite the headwinds.
