However, despite this digital boom, <strong>cash remains indispensable<\/strong> for many daily activities, especially in the informal economy and in areas where digital infrastructure is uneven. Small notes are crucial for low-value purchases such as tea, auto rides, small groceries, daily wages and other routine transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, cash users and merchants frequently struggle to get <strong>change for larger denominations<\/strong> such as \u20b9500 notes, leading to inconvenience and delays in payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Hybrid ATMs Will Do<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s proposal includes two key innovations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Small-Denomination Cash Machines:<\/strong> New machines being piloted in <strong>Mumbai<\/strong> can <strong>dispense \u20b910, \u20b920 and \u20b950 notes<\/strong> directly, instead of the usual larger denominations like \u20b9100 or \u20b9500. These could be placed at <strong>high-footfall locations<\/strong> such as transport hubs, markets, hospitals and government offices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hybrid ATMs:<\/strong> These machines would not only dispense cash but also <strong>exchange large notes for smaller bills and coins<\/strong> in a single transaction \u2014 acting as both a withdrawal and change-making instrument. Such a model has already been trialled in a bank branch in Mumbai.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These hybrid machines would help resolve a \u201c<strong>change crunch<\/strong>\u201d that affects many cash users daily, making it easier to pay exact amounts without relying on others for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Balancing Cash and Digital Payments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The push for small notes comes at a time when digital payments \u2014 particularly UPI \u2014 dominate India\u2019s payment landscape, reducing dependence on cash for many users. Yet, cash remains vital for <strong>semi-urban and rural populations<\/strong>, daily wage workers, and informal sector participants where smartphone penetration or internet connectivity may be limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To truly ease the shortage, the government may also encourage the <strong>Reserve Bank of India (RBI)<\/strong> to <strong>print more small denomination notes<\/strong>, ensuring a broader supply matches the new ATM capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As pilot projects in Mumbai progress, authorities are expected to review outcomes and decide on <strong>national deployment<\/strong>.
