{"id":1303209,"date":"2025-12-05T12:38:53","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T07:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1303209"},"modified":"2025-12-05T12:39:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T07:09:24","slug":"sim-holder-will-be-jailed-even-if-sim-wasnt-used-by-that-user","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/sim-holder-will-be-jailed-even-if-sim-wasnt-used-by-that-user\/","title":{"rendered":"SIM Holder Will Be Jailed, Even If SIM Wasn&#8217;t Used By That User"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A single unexpected message from an old or unused number can reveal that someone may have used a SIM card issued in your name for criminal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-20.jpeg\" alt=\"SIM Holder Will Be Jailed, Even If SIM Wasn't Used By That User\" class=\"wp-image-1303285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-20.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-20-300x140.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-20-768x357.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Telecom warned that if a SIM card taken under your identity is later used for cyber fraud or any illegal act, you could be held responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You Could Be Held Liable if Someone Misuses a SIM Issued in Your Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The government advised people to stay cautious about any device or SIM linked to their name and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are told not to use mobile phones with altered or fake IMEI numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advisory also warns against purchasing or using modems, SIM boxes, or other devices that have <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/telecom\/telecom-policy\/a-sim-in-your-name-could-land-you-in-court-even-if-you-never-used-it-dot-warns\/articleshow\/125538093.cms?from=mdr\">configurable or tampered IMEIs.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens should not obtain SIM cards with fake papers, fraud, or impersonation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should not give or transfer a SIM card registered in your name to someone else, because it could be misused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement clearly warns: &#8220;Citizens should be aware that using devices with tampered IMEI numbers, procuring SIM cards through fraudulent means, or transferring or giving their SIM cards to others who misuse them for cyber fraud can result in serious legal consequences. The original user may also be held liable as an offender in cases where SIM cards procured in their name are subsequently misused.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Avoid Apps That Alter Caller ID or Network Identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People are advised not to use any apps or websites that change the Calling Line Identity or other network identifiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, anyone who tampers with telecom identifiers like IMEI numbers can face strict punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The penalties under the Act may include up to three years in jail, fines up to Rs 50 lakh, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024 forbid changing IMEIs or owning equipment that can alter or configure IMEIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens are urged to check the IMEI details of their devices using the Sanchar Saathi website or mobile app, which shows the device\u2019s brand, model, and manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement also says: &#8220;The government has also implemented the Sanchar Saathi initiative, providing digital tools for citizens to verify and secure their mobile connections.
