This nationwide purge was completed over the last four to five months after the Centre directed all states to eliminate inflated or erroneous beneficiary entries by September 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-23-at-8.58.35-AM-1024x558.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1302902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-23-at-8.58.35-AM-1024x558.png 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-23-at-8.58.35-AM-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-23-at-8.58.35-AM-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-23-at-8.58.35-AM-1536x837.png 1536w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-23-at-8.58.35-AM-2048x1115.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Food Secretary <strong>Sanjeev Chopra<\/strong> confirmed the development on November 18, stressing that the clean-up is <a href=\"https:\/\/organiser.org\/2025\/11\/20\/326525\/bharat\/nfsa-cleanup-drive-removes-2-25-crore-ineligible-beneficiaries-in-massive-nationwide-purge\/\">essential<\/a> for improving the targeting accuracy of India\u2019s most extensive food welfare programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Was Removed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution identified several categories of individuals who were wrongly availing subsidised food grains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People owning <strong>four-wheelers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Individuals with <strong>monthly incomes above state-specific limits<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Company directors<\/strong> registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deceased persons<\/strong> whose names remained on ration cards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These names were flagged through data analytics and then handed to respective state governments for verification. Only after confirmation were they removed from the NFSA list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Clean-Up Was Necessary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the NFSA, enacted in 2013, <strong>81.35 crore Indians<\/strong>\u2014around two-thirds of the population\u2014are entitled to subsidised food grains. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)<\/strong> households, receiving 35 kg of food grains monthly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Priority Household (PHH)<\/strong> beneficiaries, receiving 5 kg per person per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, states had reported only <strong>80.56 crore<\/strong> active beneficiaries, leaving space for nearly <strong>0.79 crore newly eligible people<\/strong> to be added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials said the presence of \u201cunintended beneficiaries\u201d was diluting the scheme\u2019s ability to reach the poorest families. The clean-up aims to redirect resources to households genuinely in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Massive Operational Effort Behind the Purge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s food security ecosystem is enormous, relying on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>19 crore+ ration cards<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5 lakh fair price shops<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coordination across <strong>all states and Union Territories<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite digitisation, Aadhaar authentication, and portability features, issues such as outdated records, income mismatches, and misuse of ration cards persisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happens Next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>States have already begun onboarding <strong>verified eligible households<\/strong> to replace those removed.
