But now, a groundbreaking study shows that artificial intelligence isn\u2019t immune either. Researchers from Texas A&M University, the University of Texas, and Purdue University have found that large language models (LLMs) can develop cognitive decline after prolonged exposure to junk web content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When AI Consumes Junk Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the study, researchers simulated what happens when AI systems continuously<\/a> train on low-quality social media posts from platforms like X (formerly Twitter). The dataset included highly viral posts containing exaggerated and clickbaity language \u2014 phrases like \u201cTODAY ONLY\u201d and \u201cWOW.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After exposure, the AI\u2019s reasoning and comprehension abilities plummeted. On the ARC benchmark<\/strong> for reasoning, the model\u2019s score dropped from 74.9 to 57.2<\/strong>, while on RULER<\/strong>, a benchmark for long-context understanding, it fell from 84.4 to 52.3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Smart to Snarky: Behavioral Decline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most alarming part wasn\u2019t just the drop in intelligence \u2014 it was the change in personality. The \u201crotted\u201d models began exhibiting toxic traits, such as narcissism, psychopathy, and irritability, while becoming less agreeable and conscientious. Essentially, they started behaving like online trolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when retrained with high-quality data, traces of this \u201cbrain rot\u201d persisted, indicating that the damage was not fully reversible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preventing AI Brain Rot<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The findings raise serious questions about how AI models are trained. Currently, most large models rely heavily on web-scraped data \u2014 which increasingly includes low-quality or manipulative content. The researchers urge companies to rethink their training pipelines and introduce stronger quality control to prevent \u201ccumulative harms\u201d over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the internet becomes more saturated with algorithm-driven junk, even AI systems risk falling prey to the same problem plaguing humans \u2014 a decline in depth, empathy, and truthfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
