According to the report, Amazon\u2019s automation team estimates that the company can avoid hiring around 1.6 lakh new workers<\/a> in the U.S. by 2027<\/strong>, saving approximately \u20b926 (30 cents) on every product it picks, packs, and ships. The total impact could result in avoiding 6 lakh new hirings<\/strong> over the next decade \u2014 even as sales volumes are expected to double.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Amazon employs around 1.2 million workers<\/strong> in the United States, making it one of the country\u2019s largest private employers. The automation shift, however, could fundamentally reshape the nature of warehouse jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Managing Perception: From \u2018Robots\u2019 to \u2018Cobots\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The internal documents also reveal Amazon\u2019s strategy to reframe its automation narrative<\/strong>. To soften public and employee backlash, the company plans to use terms like \u201cadvanced technology\u201d instead of \u201cAI and automation\u201d and \u201ccobots\u201d (collaborative robots) instead of \u201crobots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This linguistic shift aims to present automation as a partnership between humans and machines<\/strong>, rather than outright replacement. Amazon also intends to boost its community engagement<\/strong> to reinforce its image as a \u201cgood corporate citizen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazon\u2019s Response and Future Outlook<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Responding to the report, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the documents reflected \u201cthe perspective of one internal group.\u201d She added that the company still plans to hire 2.5 lakh workers<\/strong> for the upcoming holiday season but did not clarify if these would be permanent positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazon\u2019s automation journey began in 2012 with its $775 million acquisition of Kiva Systems<\/strong>. Today, its advanced warehouses use over 1,000 robots per facility<\/strong>, marking a pivotal shift toward fully automated logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
