These small modular reactors (SMRs) are being designed by scientists at the <strong>Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)<\/strong> under the project named <strong>Bharat Small Modular Reactors (BSMR)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-21-at-10.00.30-AM-1024x641.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1301624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-21-at-10.00.30-AM-1024x641.png 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-21-at-10.00.30-AM-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-21-at-10.00.30-AM-768x481.png 768w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-21-at-10.00.30-AM-1536x962.png 1536w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-21-at-10.00.30-AM.png 2034w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A senior official revealed that the reactors\u2014one of <strong>55 MW<\/strong> and another of <strong>200 MW<\/strong>\u2014can be used for <strong>captive power generation<\/strong> by energy-intensive industries like cement and steel. \u201cThese nuclear reactors are very safe and can even be used to power merchant navy ships,\u201d the official <a href=\"https:\/\/infra.economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/ports-shipping\/india-developing-200-mw-nuclear-reactors-for-ships\/124701273\">said<\/a>, while ruling out their use for defense submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, India\u2019s nuclear fleet includes <strong>INS Arihant<\/strong> and <strong>INS Arighaat<\/strong>, submarines powered by 83 MW nuclear reactors, with <strong>INS Aridhaman<\/strong> undergoing trials. However, the new compact reactors are meant for <strong>civil and commercial applications<\/strong>, marking a new phase in India\u2019s nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To further accelerate growth, the government plans to <strong>amend the Atomic Energy Act, 1962<\/strong>, allowing <strong>private sector participation<\/strong> in the civil nuclear industry. This includes permitting private firms to <strong>operate nuclear power plants<\/strong>, manage parts of the <strong>nuclear fuel cycle<\/strong>, and even <strong>import fuel<\/strong> from abroad under specific conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, changes to the <strong>Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLND)<\/strong> aim to define \u2018supplier\u2019 more clearly and <strong>cap the liability of equipment providers<\/strong>, encouraging global collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a bold target of reaching <strong>100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047<\/strong>, a massive leap from the current <strong>8.8 GW<\/strong>.
