The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL)<\/strong> has revealed fresh details about the much-anticipated metro corridor linking Millennium City Centre to Cyber Hub<\/strong>. The system will be capable of speeds up to 90 kmph<\/strong>, with trains available every five minutes during peak hours<\/strong>, ensuring faster and more efficient travel across the city\u2019s major commercial hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three-Coach Trains Initially, Expandable to Six<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In its first phase, the Gurugram Metro will operate three-coach trains<\/strong> with a total capacity of 975 passengers<\/strong>. As ridership<\/a> rises, these will be upgraded to six-coach formations<\/strong>, carrying up to 2,004 passengers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A senior GMRL official confirmed that 26 trains<\/strong>\u2014comprising 78 stainless-steel coaches<\/strong>\u2014will be procured initially. Each coach will measure 3.9 metres in height and 2.9 metres in width<\/strong>, meeting international safety and design standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depot Cost Triples Due to Expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The cost estimate for the upcoming metro depot near Marble Market in Sector 33<\/strong> has risen sharply\u2014from \u20b9110 crore to \u20b9332 crore<\/strong>. The depot\u2019s planned area has been expanded from 5.5 hectares to 22.86 hectares<\/strong>, and its internal track length from 6 km to 18 km<\/strong>, to accommodate increased operational capacity and maintenance needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Underground Metro Proposal Faces Delay Concerns<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Discussions are also ongoing about introducing an underground metro line in Old Gurugram<\/strong> as part of Phase 2<\/strong>. However, GMRL officials cautioned that such a move could delay the second phase by up to 18 months<\/strong>, as it would require fresh route surveys, environmental assessments, and geotechnical studies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile the underground option could resolve several urban issues, it would also raise project costs considerably,\u201d said a senior official on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
