Speaking ahead of his meetings in Mumbai and New Delhi<\/strong>, Starmer emphasized that the visit was about \u201cproviding opportunities\u201d for Indian businesses to benefit from the deal\u2014not changing visa policies. \u201cNo business leader I\u2019ve met has raised the question of visas,\u201d he told reporters, reiterating<\/a> that visas \u201cplayed no part\u201d in the trade agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No New Visa Routes for Indian Workers or Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite speculation that the UK might open new visa pathways for Indian professionals\u2014especially after U.S. changes to H-1B visa rules\u2014Starmer said there were no plans for new visa routes<\/strong>. He maintained that the UK continues to welcome \u201ctop talent from across the globe\u201d but remains committed to reducing overall immigration levels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new trade deal, signed in July 2025<\/strong>, reduces tariffs on key exports such as UK cars and whisky<\/strong>, while making Indian textiles and jewelry<\/strong> cheaper for British consumers. It also grants Indian employees on short-term UK assignments a three-year exemption from social security payments<\/strong>, though ministers confirmed that immigration rules remain unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade, Flights, and Films Strengthen Ties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the two-day visit, Starmer announced that Yash Raj Films<\/strong> will produce three new Bollywood films in the UK from 2026<\/strong>, ending an eight-year gap. Downing Street said the move would generate 3,000 jobs<\/strong> and inject millions into the UK economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, British Airways<\/strong> unveiled plans for a third daily Delhi\u2013Heathrow<\/strong> flight, and Manchester Airport<\/strong> announced a new direct route to Delhi<\/strong>, reinforcing growing connectivity between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diplomatic and Human Rights Discussions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Starmer is also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong>, where he will raise the case of Jagtar Singh Johal<\/strong>, a British Sikh imprisoned in India for seven years without conviction. On geopolitical issues, he reaffirmed the UK\u2019s stance against Russia\u2019s oil trade, clarifying he would not congratulate Vladimir Putin<\/strong> on his birthday\u2014a pointed diplomatic message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
