Anthropic, the San Francisco\u2013based AI startup behind the Claude AI assistant, is making a major move into India. Co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei<\/strong> is in the country this week to establish a new office in Bengaluru<\/strong> and explore a strategic partnership with Reliance Industries<\/strong>, according to a TechCrunch report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amodei is expected to meet Mukesh Ambani<\/strong> and senior Reliance executives in Mumbai<\/strong> to discuss expanding Claude\u2019s presence in India. Sources revealed that both companies have been in talks for months about integrating Anthropic\u2019s AI models into Reliance\u2019s growing AI infrastructure ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India, home to over a billion internet users<\/strong>, has quickly become Anthropic\u2019s second-largest market after the U.S<\/a>.<\/strong>. Data from Similarweb shows India contributes the second-highest traffic to Claude\u2019s website globally. Several Indian startups already use Claude\u2019s large language models for AI-driven solutions aimed at both local and global clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2025<\/strong>, Reliance launched a new AI-focused unit, Reliance Intelligence<\/strong>, partnering with Google and Meta to build enterprise-grade AI systems. The conglomerate had also explored ties with OpenAI<\/strong>, which plans to open a New Delhi office next year. However, that partnership remains pending after Sam Altman<\/strong> postponed his India visit last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amodei\u2019s itinerary includes meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong>, lawmakers, and tech investors in New Delhi<\/strong>, before heading to Bengaluru on Thursday to formally announce Anthropic\u2019s India office. Senior Anthropic executives, including Guillaume Princen<\/strong> and Daniel Delaney<\/strong>, are accompanying him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthropic\u2019s Claude app<\/strong> has seen rapid adoption in India, with 767,000 installs<\/strong> and a 572% surge in consumer spending<\/strong> year-over-year, according to Appfigures. While India\u2019s spending remains below the U.S. ($195,000 vs. $2.5 million in September), growth momentum is strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike OpenAI\u2019s policy- and marketing-driven approach, Anthropic aims to engage Indian developers and startups<\/strong>, offering access to its models for localized innovation. The company\u2019s growing footprint reflects India\u2019s rising influence in the global AI ecosystem\u2014joining OpenAI and Perplexity AI<\/strong>, which recently partnered with Bharti Airtel<\/strong> to expand its reach among Indian users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
