After months of lagging behind, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)<\/strong> outperformed Bharti Airtel<\/strong> in new mobile subscriber additions in August 2025<\/strong>, marking a significant milestone in the telecom sector. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)<\/strong>, BSNL added 13.85 lakh<\/strong> new customers during the month, compared to Airtel\u2019s 4.96 lakh<\/strong>, while Reliance Jio<\/strong> maintained its leadership with over 19 lakh<\/strong> new additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total number of telephone subscribers in India grew to 122.45 crore<\/strong> by the end of August, up from 122 crore<\/strong> in July \u2014 fueled by a net addition of 35.19 lakh<\/strong> mobile users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BSNL\u2019s Comeback with 4G Rollout<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

BSNL last led the market in September 2024<\/strong>, shortly after private operators hiked tariffs, even while offering only 3G services<\/strong>. Its recent nationwide 4G rollout<\/strong> has significantly improved its competitiveness, attracting new users and strengthening its position in India\u2019s telecom landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broadband and Wireline Trends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In broadband, Jio<\/strong> dominated with over 50 crore<\/strong> users, followed by Airtel (30.9 crore)<\/strong> and Vodafone Idea (12.7 crore)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the wireline segment<\/strong>, Jio reported a decline of 15.5 lakh<\/strong> users due to a reclassification of its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)<\/strong> subscribers, now counted under wireless. Tata Teleservices<\/strong>, Airtel<\/strong>, and Vodafone Idea<\/strong> led growth in wireline, while MTNL<\/strong> and BSNL<\/strong> continued to lose subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M2M and Future Outlook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In M2M (machine-to-machine) connectivity<\/strong>, Airtel<\/strong> led with 5.26 crore<\/strong> connections (58.66% share), followed by Vodafone Idea<\/strong>, Jio<\/strong>, and BSNL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
