Artificial intelligence is evolving faster than most people realise \u2014 and its impact on jobs could be seismic. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<\/strong> has cautioned that AI could replace up to 40% of existing jobs<\/strong> worldwide by 2030, as automation accelerates far beyond expectations. Currently, about 1% of human tasks are handled by AI, but that figure is set to surge dramatically in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of 2024, there are around 3.4 billion jobs<\/a> in the world. 40% jobs, or 1.4 billion jobs can be wiped off, as per Sam Altman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Evolution to Revolution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network in Berlin, Altman pointed<\/a> out that job roles have always evolved with technological progress. However, he believes the current wave of AI innovation will reshape the job market at unprecedented speed. \u201cEvery 75 years, about half of all jobs change \u2014 but this time, it will happen much faster,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that OpenAI\u2019s next-generation model, GPT-5<\/strong>, is already smarter than most humans, underscoring the pace of advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promise and Peril of Superintelligence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Altman predicted that AI could reach superintelligence by 2030<\/strong>, enabling discoveries and problem-solving capabilities beyond human capacity. Such breakthroughs could revolutionize industries from healthcare to space exploration. Yet, the same technology poses significant risks \u2014 particularly widespread job displacement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t have extraordinarily capable models that can do things humans can\u2019t by the end of the decade, I\u2019d be surprised,\u201d Altman warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which Jobs Are Most at Risk?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to Altman, fields like programming and customer service<\/strong> will be among the first to experience automation. However, roles that require empathy, human connection, and complex physical tasks \u2014 such as nursing<\/strong> \u2014 are likely to remain less affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While AI\u2019s rise could lead to layoffs, it could also create new categories of work, much like previous technological revolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing for the AI Economy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Altman\u2019s message is clear: governments, businesses, and individuals must prepare now for a future where AI is deeply integrated into the workforce<\/strong>. Those who adapt early \u2014 by learning new skills and leveraging AI as a tool \u2014 will be best positioned to thrive in the coming decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
