The UK\u2019s intelligence-sharing alliance, <strong>Five Eyes<\/strong>, has also agreed to pressure nations reluctant to take back their citizens. Officials say India, despite a 2021 returns deal, has been slow in issuing emergency travel documents for undocumented deportees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Many Indians Could Be Affected?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India has the <strong>highest number of visa overstayers<\/strong> in the UK, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wionews.com\/india-news\/over-20-000-indians-in-britains-at-risk-as-uk-s-new-home-secretary-targets-india-in-migrant-crackdown-plan-1757403649845\">20,706 Indians recorded in 2020<\/a><\/strong> alone. While India did take back <strong>7,395 citizens in 2024<\/strong>, more than any other nationality, UK officials argue that delays remain common. Pakistan, meanwhile, has rejected the return of convicted criminals, while Nigeria also features high on the overstayer list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risks to Diplomatic Relations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Migration experts warn that this policy may <strong>strain UK\u2013India relations<\/strong>, especially as India has long pushed for privileged visa access. Dr. Peter Walsh of Oxford University\u2019s Migration Observatory noted that India views such bargaining tactics negatively, and London risks undermining ties with one of its biggest visa user bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahmood, who has pledged to be a <strong>\u201cwhatever it takes\u201d Home Secretary<\/strong>, told staff to either \u201cbring their A-game or leave.\u201d With <strong>migrant crossings up 37% this year<\/strong>, her government is under pressure to act.
