{"id":1299793,"date":"2025-09-04T12:11:33","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T06:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1299793"},"modified":"2025-09-04T12:12:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T06:42:08","slug":"spending-by-indian-students-in-us-at-7-year-low-trump-is-the-only-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/spending-by-indian-students-in-us-at-7-year-low-trump-is-the-only-reason\/","title":{"rendered":"Spending By Indian Students In US At 7-Year Low: Trump Is The Only Reason"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Amid stricter international student policies in the US and other developed countries, Indians have significantly reduced the money they send abroad for their children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ify-2-1.png\" alt=\"Spending By Indian Students In US At 7-Year Low: Trump Is The Only Reason\" class=\"wp-image-1299795\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ify-2-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ify-2-1-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ify-2-1-768x357.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>RBI data shows outward remittances for education under the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/business\/us-visa-troubles-indian-foreign-studies-7-year-low-10227082\/lite\/\">Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS)<\/a> in January\u2013June 2025 totaled $1.16 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indians Slash Overseas Education Remittances as Student Visa Rules Tighten Globally<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was 22% lower than last year and the lowest first-half figure in seven years, since 2018 when $1.06 billion was sent abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a larger share of remittances usually occurs in the second half of the year due to admission cycles, the January\u2013June period is still substantial, averaging 45% of yearly transfers over the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2025, only $139 million was sent abroad under LRS \u2014 the lowest monthly figure since April 2020 during the COVID-hit months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under LRS, Indian residents can remit up to $250,000 per financial year for purposes such as travel, education, medical treatment, and foreign investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decline comes as countries like the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia tighten visa and admission rules for international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada has more than doubled the minimum living expense requirement to 22,895 Canadian dollars starting September 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia increased its minimum IELTS score last year for certain categories of international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the US, the Department of Homeland Security recently proposed ending the \u2018duration of status\u2019 system, which allowed students to stay as long as they were enrolled full-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>US Proposal Seeks Four-Year Cap on International Student Stays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the new proposal, stays would be capped at four years, after which students must apply for an extension of stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows a legal battle earlier in the year between the Trump administration and Harvard University, where Harvard was temporarily barred from enrolling international students until a restraining order was issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crisil\u2019s Malvika Bhotika says Indians are shifting from the US to Germany and domestic colleges, slowing education loan growth. Bank loans rose 14% vs 20% last year, while NBFC growth may halve to 25%.
