STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month extension, commonly called STEM OPT. To work under OPT, students must secure an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, around <strong>194,554 students used OPT, 95,384 benefited from STEM OPT, and 130,586 worked under CPT (Curricular Practical Training).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calls for Termination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration is advocating for ending OPT, with policy experts like <strong>Jessica Vaughan<\/strong> urging tighter controls or elimination of certain visa categories. <strong>Joseph Edlow<\/strong>, set to lead USCIS, has also argued that OPT employment is not authorized under U.S. law for students after graduation. This signals a policy shift that could significantly impact foreign graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proposed Tax Changes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, OPT participants are exempt from <strong>FICA taxes<\/strong> (Social Security and Medicare), unlike U.S. workers. Lawmakers are now pushing for this exemption to be removed. If passed, students and employers would each face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>6.2% Social Security tax<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1.45% Medicare tax<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This would raise the cost of hiring OPT students and reduce their take-home pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enforcement and Compliance Warnings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration authorities have begun tightening enforcement on OPT participants. <strong>ICE has issued warning notices<\/strong> to students who have gone over 90 days without reporting an employer in the SEVIS system. Failure to update records could result in deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, USCIS is cracking down on fraudulent practices, such as employers issuing fake payrolls to make students appear employed. Submitting such records is considered fraud and could lead to the <strong>cancellation of the I-20 form<\/strong>, jeopardizing legal student status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Lies Ahead?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The uncertainty around OPT is creating anxiety among Indian and other international students who rely on the program for U.S. work experience.
