Even more striking, Gujarat did not feature in the top 10 states with taxpayers earning between \u20b925 lakh and \u20b950 lakh\u2014a category led by Maharashtra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/TaxCodeBillUpdate-1280x720-1-1024x576-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Jharkhand Paid More Income Tax Than Gujarat! The largest cluster of tax filers reported annual incomes in the <strong>\u20b92.5 lakh to \u20b97.5 lakh bracket<\/strong>. More than half of the middle class is concentrated here, with only <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/new-updates\/rich-gujarat-not-even-in-top-10-high-taxpayer-states-falling-even-behind-jharkhand\/articleshow\/123428383.cms?from=mdr\">2.5% of taxpayers<\/a> earning above \u20b925 lakh annually<\/strong>. This highlights how thin the upper-middle-class layer remains in India\u2019s economic pyramid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maharashtra Leads, Karnataka Produces More \u2018Lakhpatis\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Maharashtra continued its dominance, with nearly <strong>1.4 lakh taxpayers declaring incomes between \u20b925 lakh and \u20b950 lakh<\/strong>, the highest in India. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu secured the second and third spots respectively. Notably, Karnataka also produced the highest proportion of \u201clakhpatis,\u201d with <strong>over 20% of its taxpayers earning between \u20b912 lakh and \u20b950 lakh<\/strong>. Surprisingly, Gujarat trailed even Bihar in this income category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delhi\u2019s Taxpayer Density Sets It Apart<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Maharashtra recorded the <strong>largest number of tax returns<\/strong> at over 46 lakh. However, <strong>Delhi stood out with the highest share of taxpayers as a proportion of its population<\/strong>. Nationally, only about <strong>3% of citizens file taxes<\/strong>. Uttar Pradesh, India\u2019s most populous state, fared below average, with just <strong>1.5% of its people filing tax returns<\/strong>, despite being second in absolute numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India\u2019s Unequal Middle Class<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The income-tax data paints a picture of a <strong>deeply unequal middle class across states<\/strong>. While Jharkhand and Karnataka are emerging with stronger proportions of higher earners, established economic hubs like Gujarat lag behind in this particular segment.
