On Independence Day 2025, BLW unveiled India\u2019s first removable solar panel system installed between active railway tracks<\/strong>. This pilot project was launched on Line No. 19 of the BLW workshop. It includes 28 bifacial monocrystalline solar panels spanning 70 metres with a total capacity of 15 kWp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panels are mounted on concrete track sleepers using an indigenous installation process. This breakthrough will allow Indian Railways to make better use of idle spaces between tracks for renewable energy generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innovative Design and Functionality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The solar panels are secured with rubber mounting pads and epoxy adhesive. This ensures resistance to vibrations from passing trains while enabling quick removal for track maintenance. The removable design combines durability with practicality, ensuring uninterrupted train operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Public Relations Officer Rajesh Kumar, BLW engineers recognised the vast potential of India\u2019s extensive railway network for solar energy generation. By introducing this system, BLW has taken a significant step in merging infrastructure with clean energy solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complementing Green Energy Efforts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This initiative aligns with Indian Railways\u2019 broader vision of adopting renewable energy. BLW already operates rooftop solar power plants, and the new track-based project adds a fresh dimension to sustainable energy innovation. If successful, the concept could be replicated across India\u2019s railway network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievements of BLW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BLW manufactured 477 locomotives in 2024\u201325<\/strong>, setting a new record. It has also exported 174 locomotives<\/strong> to 11 countries, including Mozambique, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. The unit has pioneered several technologies, including the WAG-11 twin-section 12,000 HP electric locomotive in 2018 and India\u2019s first bi-mode locomotive, the WDAP-5, in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition and Awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BLW\u2019s consistent excellence has earned it prestigious honours such as the Best Production Unit Shield<\/strong> (2016\u20132018) and the Loco Cab Design Award<\/strong> for ergonomic designs. The installation of removable solar panels marks yet another milestone in BLW\u2019s journey of innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
