The Maharashtra state government, in collaboration with the Central government, has approved the construction of third and fourth railway tracks on the Pune\u2013Lonavala section. The project, a long-standing demand from commuters and stakeholders, was finalized during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol confirmed that years of continuous follow-up have finally resulted in the much-awaited clearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Expansion Was Needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Pune\u2013Mumbai corridor is among India\u2019s busiest railway routes, serving both heavy passenger and goods traffic. Within this stretch, the Pune\u2013Lonavala section plays a critical role, witnessing 41 suburban train services daily<\/a><\/strong>, in addition to several express and mail trains. Close to 2 lakh passengers<\/strong> use this section every day, resulting in severe congestion, delays, and overcrowding during peak hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefits of the New Tracks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The construction of third and fourth lines will directly address the demand-supply gap by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Increasing train frequency<\/strong> for daily commuters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Reducing congestion<\/strong> for both suburban and long-distance trains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Improving punctuality<\/strong> and reducing delays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Facilitating goods movement<\/strong>, ensuring smoother logistics between Pune and Mumbai.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Enhancing overall connectivity<\/strong>, especially as Pune emerges as a major IT and industrial hub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Officials stated that the cost will be shared between the State and Central governments, ensuring quicker execution and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
