Each sterilisation costs approximately <strong>\u20b91,000 per dog<\/strong>. This program has been the city\u2019s primary method of managing the stray dog population, but the new directive demands a shift toward large-scale sheltering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cost of Relocation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to officials, caring for a single dog in a shelter\u2014including <strong>food, medical care, transport, cleaning, and staff costs<\/strong>\u2014would require at least <strong>\u20b9110 per day<\/strong>. With an estimated <strong>one million stray dogs<\/strong> in Delhi, this amounts to an astronomical <strong>\u20b911 crore every day<\/strong>. Animal rights activists argue that such costs highlight the impracticality of mass relocation and reinforce the need for alternative approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supreme Court\u2019s Directive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme Court recently ordered that <strong>Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad<\/strong> each build shelters capable of housing at least <strong>5,000 stray dogs within six to eight weeks<\/strong>. The order also directed civic authorities to prioritise dogs involved in <strong>repeated biting incidents<\/strong> or those suffering from <strong>serious illness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identifying Shelter Sites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The MCD has begun considering potential locations, including an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/india-news\/rs-110-per-dog-per-day-mcd-warns-delhis-stray-dog-relocation-plan-could-cost-rs-11-crore-a-day\/3946154\/\">80-acre site at Ghogha Dairy<\/a><\/strong> and land in <strong>Dwarka Sector 29<\/strong>. Officials, however, emphasised that the actual scale of relocation will depend on the Supreme Court\u2019s final order. With the civic body already burdened by <strong>unpaid contractor bills, staff salaries, and loan repayments<\/strong>, the proposed project threatens to deepen financial distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Financial and Ethical Dilemma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While some states, like Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, have backed the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling citing public safety, others, including Karnataka and West Bengal, have labelled mass relocation as <strong>\u201ccruelty\u201d<\/strong>.
