Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced a major overhaul of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, calling it a \u201cDiwali gift\u201d for the people of India. The Centre is now working on cutting down the existing four GST slabs to just two\u2014standard (18%) and merit (5%)<\/strong>, with only a few items continuing to attract a special 40% tax, such as tobacco, alcohol, pan masala, and online betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, 99% of products currently taxed at 12% are proposed<\/a> to move to the 5% slab<\/strong>, while 90% of items under the 28% slab are likely to shift to the 18% slab<\/strong>. This will directly reduce prices of a wide range of goods, from household items to electronics and essential services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal has already been circulated among states and the Group of Ministers (GoM) of the GST Council. A final decision is expected in the upcoming GST Council meeting in September\u2013October, ensuring that the new rates are implemented before Diwali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Items To Become Cheaper Under 5% Slab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Products that were earlier under the 12% GST slab will now move to 5%, making them more affordable. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Tooth powder, toothpaste (certain branded variants), and soaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Hair oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Umbrellas<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Mobiles and computers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Processed food and packaged foods (condensed milk, frozen vegetables, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Water filters, purifiers (non-electric)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Pressure cookers, electric irons, water heaters, vacuum cleaners (domestic use)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Sewing machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Carriages for disabled persons<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Readymade garments (above \u20b91,000) and footwear (\u20b9500\u2013\u20b91,000 range)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Most vaccines, diagnostic kits (HIV, Hepatitis, TB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Ayurvedic and Unani medicines<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Exercise books, geometry boxes, maps, globes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Cookware and utensils (aluminium, steel)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Bicycles, non-kerosene stoves, barbecues<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Liquid soap<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Public transport vehicles (when sold, not for fare)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Glazed tiles (basic, non-luxury)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Pre-fabricated buildings, vending machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Agricultural equipment (mechanical threshers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Solar water heaters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Items To Become Cheaper Under 18% Slab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Items currently taxed at 28% will now move to 18%, significantly reducing costs for consumers. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Insurance (may even move to zero in some categories)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Cement and ready-mix concrete<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • ACs, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Car and motorcycle seats<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Aerated water<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Dishwashers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Aircraft for personal use<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Protein concentrates, sugar syrups, coffee concentrates<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Dental floss, razors, manicure\/pedicure kits<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Commercial plastic products, rubber tyres<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Printers, tempered glass, aluminium foil, plaster<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      With this reform, the government aims to lighten the tax burden on the common man, boost MSMEs, and stimulate the economy<\/strong> ahead of the festive season.
