However, following strong public opposition and intervention by the Delhi government, the order was <strong>deferred until November 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Delhi government argued that environmental conditions and technology have evolved since 2018, making age-based bans less effective than pollution-based assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supreme Court\u2019s Interim Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A bench comprising <strong>Chief Justice BR Gavai<\/strong> and <strong>Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria<\/strong> issued notices to the Centre and CAQM, seeking their response within four weeks. Meanwhile, the court directed that <strong>no coercive action<\/strong> should be taken against owners solely on the basis of vehicle age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Justice Gavai\u2019s bench clarified:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn the meantime, we direct that no coercive steps be taken against the owners on the ground that vehicles are 10 years old in respect of diesel vehicles and 15 years old in respect of petrol vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delhi Government\u2019s Argument<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Delhi Environment Minister <strong>Manjinder Singh Sirsa<\/strong> said the government\u2019s stand was that <strong>pollution levels<\/strong>, not vehicle age, should determine whether a vehicle is banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf a vehicle is polluting, it should be banned, regardless of whether it\u2019s five years old or fifteen,\u201d Sirsa noted, emphasising that advanced emission-control technologies are now available.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wider Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The case could reshape the debate on <strong>vehicle emissions policy<\/strong> in India.
