In a progressive move to combat the plastic waste crisis, the Kerala government has announced a bottle-return scheme for liquor bottles<\/strong> sold through its Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) outlets. This is part of the state\u2019s broader effort to encourage responsible consumption and waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Scheme Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Starting September 2025<\/strong>, liquor bottles\u2014whether plastic or glass\u2014will carry an additional refundable<\/a> \u20b920 deposit<\/strong>. This amount will be returned to customers once they bring back the empty bottles to the Bevco outlet. Each bottle will feature a QR code<\/strong> to facilitate easy tracking and ensure a transparent refund process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excise Minister MB Rajesh<\/strong> emphasized that this is not an extra charge<\/strong> but an \u201cinvestment in responsible consumption.\u201d The project is being launched in partnership with Clean Kerala Company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilot Project in Two Cities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The scheme will initially roll out in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur<\/strong> as a pilot project<\/strong>. If successful, it will be expanded across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kerala sells around 70 crore liquor bottles<\/strong> annually, of which 80% are plastic<\/strong>. The new initiative could drastically reduce the number of bottles dumped in public spaces and landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Move Toward Glass for Premium Liquor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a related decision, the excise department has announced that all liquor priced above \u20b9800<\/strong> will now be sold only in glass bottles<\/strong>. This aims to reduce the long-term environmental impact of high-end liquor packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super Premium Bevco Outlets Coming Soon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Adding to its efforts to revamp the liquor retail experience, the department is set to open Bevco\u2019s first-ever super premium outlet<\/strong> in Thrissur<\/strong> on August 5<\/strong>. These stores will exclusively stock foreign liquor priced above \u20b9900<\/strong>. The state plans to open one such outlet in each district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by Tamil Nadu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kerala\u2019s move takes inspiration from Tamil Nadu<\/strong>, where a similar bottle-return system has been implemented with success. With clear implementation guidelines and customer cooperation, Kerala hopes to create a model that merges eco-consciousness with efficient governance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
