However, the scheme was suspended during the pandemic and has not been restored since, drawing criticism from many quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does the Government Say?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaishnaw clarified that while the government understands public sentiment, it also faces a <strong>massive financial load<\/strong>. In 2023\u201324, Indian Railways provided <strong>a passenger ticket subsidy of \u20b960,466 crore<\/strong>, which translates to a <strong>45% average concession<\/strong> for all rail travelers. To explain simply, if the actual cost of a train ticket is \u20b9100, passengers pay only \u20b955.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Railway Minister also emphasized that concessions have <strong>not been entirely withdrawn<\/strong>. Several categories still benefit from additional discounts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans)<\/strong> \u2013 4 categories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Patients<\/strong> \u2013 11 categories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Students<\/strong> \u2013 8 categories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Push for Senior Citizen Concessions?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior citizens, especially those from lower-income backgrounds, heavily rely on train travel for visiting family, religious tourism, and accessing affordable medical treatment. Many believe the absence of specific senior concessions is unfair, especially when <strong>other discounts continue<\/strong> for niche categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens Next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Railway Ministry is currently reviewing the Standing Committee\u2019s advice. While there&#8217;s <strong>no official commitment yet<\/strong>, the fact that the matter has been acknowledged at a high level is encouraging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, senior citizens will have to wait and watch.
