Traders have the opportunity to respond with proper documentation. If the transaction data includes <strong>exempted goods or services<\/strong>\u2014such as tuition or unbranded food items\u2014the notice will be withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that <strong>crossing the Rs 20 lakh threshold for services or Rs 40 lakh for goods<\/strong> makes GST registration mandatory, as per law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UPI Is Just an Indicator, Not Sole Evidence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials stressed that UPI transactions are <strong>only one indicator<\/strong> used by the Service Analysis Wing to flag potential GST defaulters. The data helps identify unregistered traders potentially collecting taxes illegally or bypassing GST obligations. However, the department is open to explanations and offers personal hearings before final assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Critics Call for More Clarity and Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trade activist <strong>Sajjanraj Mehta<\/strong> criticized the lack of prior awareness and differentiation between exempt and taxable goods. He emphasized that <strong>UPI inflows often mix personal and business transactions<\/strong>, and that the current process lacks clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He warned that sudden enforcement is leading some traders to revert to <strong>cash-only modes<\/strong>, especially in semi-urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Traders Want<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clear GST guidelines<\/strong> for UPI transactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distinction between taxable and exempt income<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Awareness campaigns in local languages<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A contest mechanism for mismatches<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grace period before penalties<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion: Need for Balance Between Compliance and Clarity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the GST department is acting within legal bounds, the rollout of these notices highlights the need for <strong>better education, transparency, and phased enforcement<\/strong>.
