Over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneindia.com\/india\/government-relaxes-sulphur-emission-norms-coal-power-plants-012-7800015.html\">79% of India\u2019s coal capacity<\/a><\/strong>, largely in rural or less populated regions, is now exempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backed by Scientific Research<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This recalibration stems from reports by <strong>IIT Delhi<\/strong>, <strong>CSIR-NEERI<\/strong>, and <strong>NIAS<\/strong>, which found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SO\u2082 levels<\/strong> across most of India are <strong>well within limits<\/strong> (3\u201320 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 vs. the 80 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 standard)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian coal has low sulphur content<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High smokestacks<\/strong> in plants allow for effective pollutant dispersion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>CPCB<\/strong> also noted that retrofitting with FGDs could paradoxically <strong>increase CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong>, due to added limestone mining, energy consumption, and transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cost, Downtime, and Grid Stability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandatory FGDs would have required over <strong>\u20b92.5 lakh crore investment<\/strong> and caused <strong>unit shutdowns for up to 45 days<\/strong>. The revised policy eases this burden on <strong>power producers and discoms<\/strong>, reducing capital expenses and helping stabilize the grid during <strong>peak demand seasons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not a Rollback\u2014A Scientific Recalibration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Government officials emphasized that this is not a weakening of environmental norms. Instead, it&#8217;s a <strong>location-based, evidence-led adjustment<\/strong>.
