With <strong>Vodafone Idea and BSNL struggling<\/strong>, the risk of losing customers to competitors is minimal. TRAI\u2019s non-interference on tariffs further encourages private players to push for higher pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Look Back at Previous Hikes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>July 2024<\/strong>, all major telecom operators raised tariffs between <strong>10% and 27%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Airtel<\/strong> increased its <strong>minimum prepaid plan<\/strong> to \u20b9199 (from \u20b9179).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>postpaid base plan<\/strong> was raised to \u20b9449 (from \u20b9399).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <strong>BSNL gained subscribers<\/strong> temporarily for keeping prices unchanged, Airtel and Jio have since bounced back. As of <strong>May 2025<\/strong>, BSNL lost <strong>1.35 lakh subscribers<\/strong>, while Airtel and Jio added <strong>2.5 lakh<\/strong> and <strong>27 lakh subscribers<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Industry Leaders Push for Restructuring<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bharti Airtel\u2019s <strong>Gopal Vittal<\/strong> recently stated that <strong>India\u2019s tariffs are among the lowest in the world<\/strong> and need &#8220;repair.&#8221; He called for a <strong>complete overhaul of the telecom pricing model<\/strong>, moving away from the current &#8220;one-size-fits-all&#8221; system to ensure long-term sustainability and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, <strong>Vodafone Idea\u2019s CEO Akshaya Moondra<\/strong> justified tariff hikes at <strong>nine-month intervals<\/strong>, citing India\u2019s challenging telecom environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What This Means for Users<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers should prepare for another round of <strong>increased mobile and data costs<\/strong>, especially on base prepaid and postpaid plans.
