In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that all new two-wheelers\u2014scooters and motorcycles alike\u2014sold from January 1, 2026, must come with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), regardless of engine capacity. This marks a major expansion of the current rule, which applies only to two-wheelers above 125cc. By extending the mandate, the ministry targets a large segment of vehicles currently excluded from ABS coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Helmets Now Mandatory With Every Bike Purchase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Along with mandatory ABS, the ministry has made it compulsory for buyers to receive two BIS-certified helmets<\/a> with every new two-wheeler. Previously, only one helmet was required by law. The new regulation addresses the high rate of pillion rider fatalities caused by lack of helmet use. Ensuring helmets for both rider and passenger aims to significantly reduce head injury-related deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision comes amid alarming road safety statistics\u2014two-wheeler users represent nearly 44% of total road accident deaths in India. ABS can reduce crash risk by up to 45% by preventing wheel lock during emergency braking, thus helping riders maintain control. The ministry is expected to release the final notification soon, reinforcing the government\u2019s commitment to safer mobility and stricter vehicle safety compliance across the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
