This shift allows drivers to <strong>keep 100% of their fares<\/strong>, making their earnings more predictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new model builds upon Ola\u2019s earlier shift for <strong>auto-rickshaw drivers<\/strong>, introduced in April 2024, and reflects a wider industry trend toward <strong>Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)<\/strong>-style models. These systems allow drivers to pay a fixed platform fee instead of surrendering a portion of every ride\u2019s fare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Move Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry experts view this as a <strong>driver-friendly reform<\/strong> that addresses long-standing concerns about fluctuating commission rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a significant win for drivers, who generally prefer a fixed subscription model that lets them retain 100% of their fares, rather than dealing with unpredictable commissions. It could also help reduce ride cancellations and driver churn,\u201d<br>said <strong>Nikhil Dhaka<\/strong>, Vice President at Primus Partners.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As <strong>Rapido expands into food delivery<\/strong> and other verticals, Ola\u2019s subscription pivot could also help it <strong>retain market share<\/strong> in core mobility services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regulatory Implications and GST Concerns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ola\u2019s new approach, however, could raise <strong>questions around tax obligations<\/strong>, particularly regarding <strong>Goods and Services Tax (GST)<\/strong>. Traditionally, a <strong>5% GST<\/strong> is levied on aggregator-facilitated rides. But platforms like <strong>Namma Yatri<\/strong>\u2014run in association with workers\u2019 unions\u2014have been <strong>exempted from GST<\/strong> by the Karnataka Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others like <strong>Rapido<\/strong>, operating as e-commerce entities, are <strong>still liable for GST<\/strong> under current regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt remains to be seen how this shift will impact Goods and Services Tax (GST) taxation, especially as newer platforms with linkages to workers\u2019 associations enjoy exemptions, while other incumbents remain liable to pay GST under current laws,\u201d<br>said <strong>Soujanya Sridharan<\/strong>, a researcher at the <strong>Aapti Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <strong>Uber<\/strong> had raised this very issue last year, challenging the <strong>discrepancy in GST treatment<\/strong> before both the <strong>Karnataka AAR<\/strong> and the <strong>GST Council<\/strong>, citing <strong>unfair competitive practices<\/strong> and <strong>lack of clarity<\/strong> in tax enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consumer Impact Still Unclear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While this shift is clearly a win for drivers, the <strong>impact on consumers<\/strong> is still uncertain. Subscription-based models might lead to <strong>better service quality<\/strong> as driver churn reduces, but <strong>fare structures<\/strong>, <strong>availability<\/strong>, and <strong>dynamic pricing<\/strong> could still evolve as the business model matures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ola has not yet officially commented on whether this model will be expanded nationally or adapted for other verticals.
