{"id":1296311,"date":"2025-06-14T09:46:32","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T04:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1296311"},"modified":"2025-06-14T09:47:07","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T04:17:07","slug":"fastags-will-soon-charge-you-per-km-travelled-not-flat-toll-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/fastags-will-soon-charge-you-per-km-travelled-not-flat-toll-charge\/","title":{"rendered":"FASTags Will Soon Charge You Per Km Travelled, Not Flat Toll Charge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>India seems to be all set to overhaul its toll collection system as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working on a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.in\/india\/story\/indias-new-toll-tax-rules-fastag-to-charge-per-kilometre-you-move-all-about-new-kilometre-based-toll-policy-480079-2025-06-12\">kilometre-based toll policy<\/a> that would replace the current flat-rate model reportedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Fastag-Banner-Opt-1280x720-1024x576-1280x720-1-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"FASTags Will Soon Charge You Per Km Travelled, Not Flat Toll Charge\" class=\"wp-image-1296318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Fastag-Banner-Opt-1280x720-1024x576-1280x720-1-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Fastag-Banner-Opt-1280x720-1024x576-1280x720-1-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Fastag-Banner-Opt-1280x720-1024x576-1280x720-1-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The vehicle owners will have to pay the tolls strictly based on the number of kilometres travelled, not on fixed slabs as per this newly proposed system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the government has not released any official notification, but multiple media reports indicate that the policy is under serious consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Does This Kilometre-based Toll Policy Work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically this new policy proposes a dynamic, usage-based tolling system which will be employed on national highways and expressways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the drivers would pay only for the distance they cover instead of paying for an entire toll stretch regardless of how far one travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving ahead, this implementation will be supported by advanced toll collection infrastructure as per the latest media report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides this, it would include&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FASTag scanners at entry and exit points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-resolution surveillance cameras to track vehicle movement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An upcoming system based on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Is This Policy Different From Current One?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present, the toll charges are being calculated based on a fixed length of highway, typically around 60 kilometres, under the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to pay the same toll, whether you travel 5 km or 59 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would change as under the proposed system, vehicle owners will pay tolls based strictly on the number of kilometres travelled, not on fixed slabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, they won&#8217;t apply any minimum threshold, so the cost of short-distance travel on highways could become significantly more affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Implementation of this policy marks a substantial shift toward fair pricing and usage-based taxation in road transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This latest policy would be bringing a lot of benefits including&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Faster travel with no waiting at toll plazas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower fuel consumption due to reduced idling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Minimal congestion on busy expressways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced disputes over incorrect deductions or toll mismatches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the government decides to implement this policy then it would bring India closer to global best practices in highway tolling systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India seems to be all set to overhaul its toll collection system as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working on a new kilometre-based toll policy that would replace the current flat-rate model reportedly.
