A senior tourism department official stated that the initiative would not only reduce travel times but also serve critical roles in emergency, medical, and disaster response scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official emphasized that road travel between popular destinations like Kochi and Munnar often takes 4\u20136 hours, limiting tourists with short stays. Helicopter travel could reduce this to about an hour at a cost of approximately \u20b95,000 per person, significantly improving travel efficiency. The service is also expected to benefit pilgrimage tourism, particularly for Sabarimala pilgrims from distant states like Andhra Pradesh, allowing them more time for spiritual activities and visits to nearby attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kerala Clears Policy Hurdles to Advance Heli-Tourism with New Operator Bids<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially launched in December 2023, the project struggled due to forest department restrictions and the absence of a dedicated policy. With limited service providers in the state, the government addressed the challenges by drafting a comprehensive heli-tourism policy, approved by the cabinet in December 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kerala Tourism is now set to shortlist applicants, with technical proposal presentations scheduled for June 23. Officials expect five to ten operators to participate in the bidding. The policy includes plans for heliports, helistations, and ancillary services, ensuring compliance with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other regulatory authorities.
