In a historic milestone for India’s economic journey, the country has overtaken Japan<\/strong> to become the world\u2019s fourth-largest economy<\/strong>, according to the April 2025 edition of the IMF\u2019s World Economic Outlook (WEO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Announcing the development, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam<\/strong> stated after the 10th Governing Council meeting, \u201cWe are now a $4 trillion economy<\/strong>. As of now, we are the fourth largest economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s GDP Now at $4.187 Trillion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the latest IMF data<\/strong>, India\u2019s GDP stands at $4.187 trillion<\/strong>, narrowly overtaking Japan\u2019s $4.186 trillion<\/strong>. This marks a major shift in the global economic hierarchy and underscores India\u2019s rising stature in global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Despite this massive leap, India ranks 144th in GDP per capita<\/strong>, reflecting significant income inequality<\/a> and a lower average standard of living compared to many smaller nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Growth Projections and Global Headwinds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The IMF projects<\/strong> India\u2019s economy to grow at 6.2% in 2025<\/strong> and 6.3% in 2026<\/strong>, maintaining strong momentum ahead of other major economies. However, these projections were revised slightly downward<\/strong> from the January update due to increasing global trade tensions and economic uncertainty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By comparison, China\u2019s economic slowdown is expected to be sharper in the long term, with a 2.7 percentage point decline<\/strong> in growth from its 2016\u201318 average. The slowdown is attributed to adverse demographics<\/strong> and the fading phase of rapid productivity catch-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    India, meanwhile, is expected to witness a more modest decline<\/strong>\u20140.7 percentage point<\/strong> between 2025 and 2050\u2014thanks to its favorable demographics<\/strong>, though the IMF warns that this advantage may fade post-2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Long-Term Challenges Loom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    While India\u2019s economic ascent is being celebrated, the IMF cautions that the demographic dividend<\/strong>\u2014which currently boosts growth\u2014will eventually turn into a headwind<\/strong>. As India passes its demographic turning point<\/strong> in the second half of this century, growth could slow sharply<\/strong> unless productivity, infrastructure, and social development keep pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
