{"id":1295436,"date":"2025-05-24T13:20:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-24T07:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1295436"},"modified":"2025-05-24T13:21:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-24T07:51:19","slug":"govt-investigates-advance-tips-for-drivers-by-rapido-is-it-legal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/govt-investigates-advance-tips-for-drivers-by-rapido-is-it-legal\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt Investigates Advance Tips For Drivers By Rapido: Is It Legal?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Recently the Indian government has issued a notice to Uber over advance tips and is now shifting its focus to investigate if bike-taxi platform Rapido is engaging in similar practice as per the media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/business\/story\/governments-notice-to-uber-over-advance-tip-feature-sources-say-similar-move-likely-against-rapido-2728285-2025-05-21\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1.png\" alt=\"Govt Investigates Advance Tips For Drivers By Rapido: Is It Legal?\" class=\"wp-image-1295444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Untitled-design-5-1-768x357.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Government Sending Notice To Uber Over Advance Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the government took action against Uber which has been asking users to pay tips in advance to secure a ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the lead, now the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) may launch a preliminary inquiry against Rapido if they find that the company is nudging users to pay tips before the service in their investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears that the CCPA sent a notice to Uber, asking the company to explain its practice of collecting advance tips from users last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have given 15 days to the platform to come with a detailed explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Asking For \u2018Advance Tip\u2019 Fall Under Unfair Trade Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this regard, the consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi raised concerns about the issue on social media, saying the practice of \u2018advance tip\u2019 is \u201cdeeply concerning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further added \u201cForcing or nudging users to pay a tip in advance, for faster service is unethical and exploitative. Such actions fall under unfair trade practices.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving ahead, he shared a screenshot of the Uber app which showcases the &#8220;Add a tip for faster pickup&#8221; message.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears that the advance tip message pops up when any user tries to book a ride.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically this feature of offering advanced tips, according to the message displayed on the app, would make a driver &#8220;more likely to accept the ride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tips should be a voluntary gesture of appreciation given after the service is complete, not something paid upfront, said Pralhad Joshi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding,\u201cFairness, transparency and accountability must be upheld in all customer interactions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the government, asking for tips before a ride could be seen as manipulating consumer rights and may violate consumer protection norms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently the Indian government has issued a notice to Uber over advance tips and is now shifting its focus to investigate if bike-taxi platform Rapido is engaging in similar practice as per the media report.
