In a sweeping traffic enforcement drive, Mumbai traffic police issued over 48,000 challans to auto and taxi drivers between April 18 and May 4. The action followed growing public complaints about drivers refusing to ply, even after a fare hike came into effect on February 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ride Refusals and Overcrowding Top the List<\/strong>
A total of 28,814 challans were issued for refusing rides \u2014 the most frequent violation<\/a>. Other offences included 6,268 cases of carrying excess passengers, 1,164 for not wearing the mandated uniform, and 12,171 for various other breaches of traffic rules. The campaign was conducted under the supervision of JCP (traffic) Anil Kumbhare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rs 40 Lakh Collected in Fines, Licence Suspensions Underway<\/strong>
Police reported a collection of Rs 40.3 lakh in fines. Meanwhile, the process of suspending licences for thousands of violators is currently in motion at the regional transport offices (RTOs). This is part of a broader attempt to ensure safer and more reliable public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RTO Launches Independent Action Across Suburbs<\/strong>
Apart from police efforts, the Andheri RTO conducted a separate crackdown in Mumbai\u2019s western suburbs. Over 4,500 auto drivers were penalised, including 89 for refusals, 164 for carrying excess passengers, and eight for demanding inflated fares. Two drivers were caught using rigged meters and 11 for rude behaviour, while thousands were fined for uniform and ID violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auto Unions Lend Support<\/strong>
Some auto unions have extended support by identifying unauthorised vehicles and drivers operating without valid documentation or uniforms in areas like Andheri, Kurla, and Jogeshwari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need for Faster Complaint Resolution<\/strong>
Commuter rights activist Anil Galgali has urged the transport department to streamline the complaint redress system. He criticised the current slow process and suggested quicker responses to commuter grievances to deter errant drivers more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
