Tensions are rising in Varanasi as Blinkit, the Zomato-owned quick commerce platform, faces backlash for allegedly blocking the IDs of nearly 150 delivery executives after they protested against harsh working conditions. Over the weekend, the gig workers organized a two-day strike, demanding an end to mandatory shifts between 12\u20134 PM, a hike in minimum delivery wages, and access to basic amenities like shaded waiting areas, drinking water, and seating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite their peaceful protests, Blinkit retaliated<\/a> by disabling the login IDs of these workers, effectively cutting off their only source of income. Many of these delivery executives, who were initially lured in by the promise of attractive incentives, now claim that earnings have drastically fallen. Delivery payouts for trips up to 2.5 km were slashed from Rs 35 to Rs 26, and overall incentive structures have been steadily declining even as the number of delivery personnel has surged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workers Forced To Sign Unofficial Agreements To Rejoin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adding to their grievances, the blocked workers were allegedly forced to sign agreements with no company letterhead or formal contract language in order to have their IDs reinstated. They were also asked to record videos holding these unsigned documents, declaring their compliance. Workers claim the documents gave Blinkit the authority to take action against them if they participated in any future protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal experts point out that while gig workers are not formally categorized as “workmen” under current Indian labor laws\u2014meaning they lack an inherent legal right to strike\u2014forcing them to sign such affidavits without proper safeguards raises serious ethical and legal concerns. According to Adil Ladha, Partner at Saraf and Partners, any contract that demands the surrender of legal rights could come under scrutiny, especially if the nature of the gig work relationship is challenged in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
