In a major move to democratize access to aviation careers<\/strong>, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)<\/strong> is preparing to eliminate the requirement of physics and mathematics<\/strong> in Class 12 for those seeking a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)<\/strong>. The proposal, once approved by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation<\/strong>, would enable students from arts and commerce backgrounds<\/strong> to enter CPL training programs in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the Current Rule?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Under current norms, only students from the science stream with physics and maths<\/strong> in Class 12 are allowed to enroll in CPL training. This restriction has been in place since the mid-1990s. Prior to that, a Class 10 pass was sufficient<\/strong> to begin pilot training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry Experts Call It \u201cOutdated\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Aviation veteran Captain Shakti Lumba<\/strong>, former VP at IndiGo, has called the current rule “archaic” and unnecessary<\/a>. He argued that no other country mandates these subjects<\/strong> for CPL eligibility and that pilots understand required concepts from earlier schooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPhysics and maths at the 12th level aren\u2019t essential for pilots. The rule is simply outdated,\u201d said Captain Lumba.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Flying Schools Welcome the Reform<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Flying school operators have long criticized the rule for being a barrier to entry<\/strong>. They point out the contradiction: Private Pilot Licences (PPL)<\/strong>, which allow individuals to fly, don\u2019t require physics or maths<\/strong>, so why should CPL?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s illogical and unfair,\u201d one flying school head commented. \u201cIt discourages passionate students from non-science backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Currently, students from arts or commerce must re-enroll in open schools<\/strong> to study physics and maths just to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The aviation industry in India is expanding rapidly<\/strong>, and there\u2019s an urgent need to increase the number of trained pilots<\/strong>. DGCA is also looking at introducing a flying school ranking system<\/strong> to assess safety, efficiency, and training quality, aiming to reduce dependency on foreign training programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
