If you\u2019ve recently installed the April 2025 Patch Tuesday update<\/strong> on your Windows 10 or 11 system and noticed a new, empty folder called C:\\inetpub<\/code>, don\u2019t panic \u2014 and definitely don\u2019t delete it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the inetpub<\/code> Folder?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The folder is associated with Internet Information Services (IIS)<\/strong>, Microsoft\u2019s built-in web server. While most regular users don\u2019t use IIS, the folder has been intentionally created<\/strong> after the update to fix a security vulnerability: CVE-2025-21204<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This flaw could let malware or rogue users gain system-level privileges<\/strong> via Windows Process Activation. The folder acts<\/a> as a protective measure<\/strong>, created with read-only SYSTEM-level access<\/strong> to prevent potential privilege-escalation exploits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even If You Don\u2019t Use IIS…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

…the folder will still be created. IIS isn\u2019t installed by default on Windows 10 or 11, but Microsoft recommends not deleting the folder<\/strong>, regardless of whether IIS is active on your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, it’s part of a silent security patch<\/strong> meant to improve system resilience. No action is needed<\/strong> from IT admins or users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accidentally Deleted It? Here\u2019s the Fix<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you’ve already removed the folder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Click \u201cTurn Windows features on or off\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Enable Internet Information Services (IIS)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Click OK \u2014 the folder will be recreated<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. You can then disable IIS again and restart<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    No Exploits in the Wild Yet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    There are no active exploits<\/strong> or publicly shared code using CVE-2025-21204 yet. But the folder is a proactive measure from Microsoft to close potential future attack vectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
