What the Study Did<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Organized by Mein Grundeinkommen<\/strong> in collaboration with DIW Berlin<\/strong> and other academic partners, the study followed 107 individuals aged 21\u201340<\/strong> living alone with moderate incomes. These participants received \u20ac1,200 per month for three years<\/strong> \u2014 no strings attached. A control group of nearly 1,600 people was also surveyed for comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surprising Work Trends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite concerns that UBI would encourage people to “retreat into the social hammock,” the data showed<\/a> no drop in employment, income, or working hours<\/strong>. Instead, many recipients used the freedom to switch jobs<\/strong>, enroll in education<\/strong>, or pursue training<\/strong> \u2014 suggesting a shift toward purpose-driven work choices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The often-discussed retreat into the social hammock did not occur,” said DIW Berlin.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Smarter Spending and Saving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Initially, recipients spent their basic income on travel and fulfilling long-held wishes<\/strong>. Later, they began to save and invest<\/strong>, with over a third of the money<\/strong> being saved. That\u2019s twice as much as the control group<\/strong>. Participants also donated more and financially supported loved ones, signaling greater generosity and social involvement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uplift in Mental Health & Social Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most striking outcome? Improved mental health and life satisfaction<\/strong>. UBI recipients reported better sleep, social connections, and use of leisure time<\/strong>. According to psychologist Susann Fiedler<\/strong>, these changes were comparable to therapy or major life events like marriage or divorce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t change who they are \u2014 their possibilities changed,\u201d Fiedler explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What It Means<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The study\u2019s results challenge conventional beliefs about welfare and work, showing that UBI empowers rather than enables dependency<\/strong>. It offered recipients more control over their time<\/strong>, reduced anxiety, and helped build stronger social ties<\/strong> \u2014 all while maintaining productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
