Swedish home-furnishing giant Ikea<\/strong> is accelerating its expansion in Delhi-NCR<\/strong>, rolling out a small-format store<\/strong> and e-commerce services from March 1<\/strong>. The retailer will offer online deliveries<\/strong> in Delhi and nine additional cities<\/strong>, including Agra, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Prayagraj, and Varanasi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ikea\u2019s move aligns with its broader strategy of combining large retail stores, small outlets, and online sales<\/strong> to tap into India’s growing home-furnishing market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening Logistics & Future Investments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To support its e-commerce push, Ikea has set up a 180,000 sq ft central distribution center in Gurgaon<\/strong> in partnership with Rhenus Logistics<\/strong>. This facility will streamline next-day delivery services<\/strong> across most stock-keeping units (SKUs) in Delhi-NCR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Ingka Group, Ikea\u2019s parent company<\/strong>, is investing in two mixed-use shopping malls<\/strong> in Noida and Gurgaon, each anchored by an Ikea store. The Noida centre<\/strong> will open by 2028<\/strong> with an investment of \u20b95,500 crore<\/strong>, while the Gurgaon mall<\/strong> is set to open next year, with an investment of \u20ac400 million (~\u20b93,500 crore)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delhi: A High-Priority Market for Ikea<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Susanne Pulverer, CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer, Ikea India<\/strong>, emphasized Delhi’s importance, stating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cDelhi is our top-priority market\u2014it is the biggest home-furnishing market. We are working towards an omni-channel strategy to cater to the demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Currently, 30% of Ikea’s India sales come from online channels<\/strong>, and this is expected to rise with its Delhi-NCR expansion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ikea\u2019s Future in India: Phase Two of Expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since its India debut in 2018 with a Hyderabad store<\/strong>, Ikea has established three large-format stores<\/strong> and one small-format store<\/strong>. The company now plans a “second phase” of investment<\/strong>, focusing on new regions like Chennai and Pune<\/strong> while strengthening its presence in Bangalore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe committed \u20b910,500 crore in our first phase, which included major projects in Gurgaon and Noida. Now, we are planning a new wave of investments,\u201d Pulverer stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Exploring Quick Commerce (Q-Commerce) & Faster Deliveries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With India\u2019s growing demand for ultra-fast deliveries<\/strong>, Ikea is assessing q-commerce strategies<\/strong> to shorten fulfillment times. While no official decision has been made, next-day deliveries will be available across most Delhi-NCR orders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial Performance & Profitability Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In FY 2024<\/strong>, Ikea India reported revenues of \u20b91,852.7 crore<\/strong>, a 5.12% increase<\/strong> from the previous year. However, losses widened from \u20b91,134.3 crore to \u20b91,303 crore<\/strong> due to ongoing investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this, Pulverer reaffirmed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are still in the investment phase, but we are moving towards profitability as per our long-term strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

With Delhi-NCR as a key driver, Ikea is poised for stronger market penetration, higher e-commerce sales, and an expanded physical retail presence<\/strong> in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
