It is probably \u201csmart\u201d to ban all under-16s from social media, said the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Banning Under-16 From All Social Media\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
While raising concern over the widespread impact of social media, Australia\u2019s parliament voted to ban all under-16s from such technology platforms last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is also making it one of the world\u2019s strictest measures against internet use for minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These new rules are set to come into full effect within a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once that happens, the platforms including Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook will be required to block under-16 users or risk fines of up to $49.5m AUD (\u00a325.7m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEverything that comes along can be used in excess. I mean there are people who think their kids read too much and they should get outside and play,\u201d said Mr Gates, while talking about his own relationship with technology as a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same applies to mobile phones, said the billionaire adding, \u201cI think that\u2019s legitimate \u2013 same thing with video games. Social networking even more. We know we have to think a lot, particularly about how kids use it, but also even when adults do,\u201dwhile talking with the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s A Smart Move <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the question of whether he would take a view on what age his own grandchild should have access to social media, he answered \u201cI think this idea of holding kids back until say age 16, which apparently Australia is going to try to do, I think it\u2019ll be fascinating to see if that\u2019s beneficial. I think there\u2019s a good chance that that\u2019s a smart thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While talking about this, prime minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged that protecting every child would be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further, he told the parents that the government has \u201cgot your back\u201d while talking about the Australian ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adding, \u201cWe know that technology moves fast. No government is going to be able to protect every child from every threat \u2013 but we have to do all we can. Parents are worried sick about this. We know they\u2019re working without a map \u2013 no generation has faced this challenge before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, UK\u2019s technology secretary Peter Kyle said that he was in touch with Australia\u2019s government about their ban in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
