{"id":1289513,"date":"2025-01-12T09:47:25","date_gmt":"2025-01-12T04:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1289513"},"modified":"2025-01-12T09:48:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-12T04:18:00","slug":"90-govt-websites-redirecting-to-scamming-fraud-websites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/90-govt-websites-redirecting-to-scamming-fraud-websites\/","title":{"rendered":"90 Govt Websites Redirecting To Scamming, Fraud Websites"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Months after TechCrunch initially brought attention to the problem, fraudulent links are still there on some Indian government websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users are redirected to websites that promote online betting and investment frauds by more than 90 &#8220;gov.in&#8221; website connections connected to several state councils and Indian government departments, such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and India Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"967\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-12-at-9.46.38\u202fAM-1024x967.png\" alt=\"90 Govt Websites Redirecting To Scamming, Fraud Websites\" class=\"wp-image-1289521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-12-at-9.46.38\u202fAM-1024x967.png 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-12-at-9.46.38\u202fAM-300x283.png 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-12-at-9.46.38\u202fAM-768x725.png 768w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-12-at-9.46.38\u202fAM.png 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fraudulent Links on Indian Government Websites<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because search engines like Google index these scam links, people are more likely to come across false content when exploring the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About four dozen connections on government websites were hacked and redirected to online gambling sites, according to a May TechCrunch article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the issue was escalated at the time by India&#8217;s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), it is still unknown whether the underlying source of the problem was resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent social media posts, such as those made by Menlo Ventures&#8217; Deedy Das, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/07\/indian-government-websites-are-still-redirecting-users-to-scam-sites\/?guccounter=1\">suggest<\/a> the issue is still present and might even be more pervasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flaws in Server Setups or CMS of Websites<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to security expert Bob Diachenko, the problem could be caused by flaws in the server setups or content management systems (CMS) of the websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diachenko cautioned that attackers may recreate the problem if the malicious content is eliminated alone without fixing the underlying flaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Diachenko, addressing the underlying reason is not a very difficult undertaking, but it does involve effort and downtime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said, \u201cIf only the symptoms (e.g., malicious content) are removed without addressing the root cause (e.g., vulnerability or backdoor), attackers can reintroduce the issue. It is not a very challenging exercise but requires some downtime and efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TechCrunch alerted CERT-In to the compromised URLs earlier this week, but the organisation did not reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the time TechCrunch was published, the impacted links started to display a &#8220;page not found&#8221; message, indicating that temporary measures were implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/govt-warns-against-fake-e-challan-scam-that-can-steal-all-your-money-dont-do-this\/\">Information Security Awareness (ISEA) division of MeitY issued a warning<\/a> in 2023, advising citizens to be cautious of falling victim to fraudulent e-challan schemes.
